Multiple domains, One Modular Merchant Ecommerce System.
By Shalom | July 6, 2007
Using Modular Merchant Ecommerce to connect multiple domains/sites to a single customized ecommerce system.
In this example, a single company has multiple websites that connect with one ecommerce system (Modular Merchant). For branding purposes the company decided to seperate product sites, but were still intersted in having one ecommerce for cross marketing and statistical purposes. One major objective in connecting the two distinct sites to one ecommerce system was to avoid a generic shopping cart design. Many times, visitors being directed from sites to external (3rd party shopping carts) cause potential customers to backout in the process as they feel as though they are being taken to a different site (loss of credability, relevance, etc.). Maintaing design is important in reducing bounce rate. Modular Merchant provides a very flexable skin template that can be customized to any design, only limited by the talent of the coder and designer working on the skin customization. Using PHP, it is also possible to define various designs that get called up based on source, allowing for the single shopping cart pages to display multiple designs for multiple referring domains.
Advanced PHP and Java scripting knowledge is necessary for correct installation of PPC conversion tracking codes and analytics in Modular Merchant especially for skins customized and connected to multiple domains. Modular Merchant does not provide techinical support for 3rd party applications. Although it is possible to implement conversion tracking and analytics, many Modular Merchant users resort to setting up affiliates to track PPC campaigns. If you care about success, don’t do this - tracking is possible even if Modular Merchant does not want to help users install it.
